Unload That Burden

Unload That Burden

People become attached to their burdens sometimes more than the burdens are attached to them.”

- George Bernard Shaw

Here’s a potential growth exercise for you to consider:

Locate either a wrist or ankle weight band (3-5 lbs) and wear it for an entire day.  Put it on in the morning and remove it only after you get in bed at night.

If you try this for an entire day, you just might gain remarkable insight into other “things” that you have made a conscious decision to carry around with you.

For instance, are you burdening yourself with fear, anxiety, or frustration?  Does carrying around one of these ‘weights’ every day slow you down?

Just as you can choose to strap on that wrist or ankle weight, you can choose to strap on that burden of fear, anxiety, or frustration.

And just as you can choose to unstrap that weight, you can unload those burdens that make you less than the best “you.”

It’s your choice.

The Longest Journey

The Longest Journey

A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination.”
- Nelson Mandela

People often struggle with balancing what’s in their head with what’s in their heart.  The logical objectivity of their head is quite different from the emotional subjectivity of the heart.

The longest journey we might have to make could be the eighteen inches from our head to our heart.

How prepared are you to make this journey?

Whose Possessions?

Whose Possessions?

The best things in life aren’t things.”

- Art Buchwald

Jonathan was pleased with himself.  Over the years he had acquired a nice, large home in a great neighborhood, two stunning automobiles and a healthy bank balance.  He had all the trappings of happiness, and yet Jonathan was not happy.

He felt an emptiness, one that could not be filled by possessions. Jonathan sadly realized that instead of bringing him joy, his things - house, cars, money - had become an unwelcome burden. His possessions possessed him.

He decided to look outward for his “riches.”  Jonathan started to focus more on others.  He reduced his emphasis on what he possessed materially and began to concentrate on what he could contribute to others.  This change in his behavior made him happier, made him feel more fulfilled.  Focussing on others helped Jonathan feel better about himself and put him in possession of his possessions.

Do you have possession of your possessions, or do they possess you?

Expiration Date

Expiration Date

“Someone should tell us, right at the start of our lives, that we are dying.  Then we might live life to the limit, every minute of every day.  Do it! I say.  Whatever you want to do, do it now!

There are only so many tomorrows.”

- Pope Paul VI

Each of us has an expiration date written on our heart.  We can’t see it.  We can’t know it.  It may be far into the future or much sooner than we can imagine.

How are we choosing to handle this inevitable date?  How are we utilizing the talents and gifts we have been given?

What difference would it make if you knew your expiration date?

How would you live your life?  What would you do better?  Differently?  What would you embrace?  What would you let go?

Your time is running out.  How will you live your life before your “Best by” date expires?

Will you have lived the life you were meant to live?
