Standing Still

Standing Still

Don't just do something, stand there.

We’ve all heard the phrase, “Don’t just stand there, do something.”  It sounds like a call for action, a reminder to get to work, get things done.  But, could it actually be a call to miss the present?

A friend recently shared with me that he took his small children to an amusement park and for the first time he stood in awe and appreciated the many exciting rides and the ton of fun his children were experiencing.

He said, “I had been to that amusement park many times before and was only focused on rushing from one ride to the next.  I had missed the main point of the park—amusement!”

In life, there is a time for “doing,” but just as importantly, there is a time for simply “being.” Between work and home, and family and friends, and all the activities in between, in can be easy to forget to take the time to stand still and take in the beauty all around us.  Standing still allows us to be fully present in the moments that shape our lives.

So, instead of, “Don’t just stand there, do something,” perhaps the phrase we really need to hear every once in a while is, “Don’t just do something, stand there.”  After all, being is just as important as doing

What Is Success?

What Is Success?

"Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming."

-John Wooden

How do you define success?  Often the first response is something along the lines of “money,” “fame,” “influence,” “power.”  On closer thought, however, these may only be superficial signs of success.

So . . . what is success?

John Wooden – the most successful college basketball coach in history- had this to say on the matter: "Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.”

Success is not just about the acquisition of money, the pursuit of power, or the glory of fame.  It is knowing you are giving your best, and, in turn, becoming your best.  It is sincere effort without fear of failing.  It is not settling for what is, but pushing for what can be.

It is living life to your full potential.

In becoming your best, you attract success!

The Missing Piece

The Missing Piece

I used to define success as being able to produce any result you wanted, whether it was a relationship, weight-loss, being a millionaire, impacting the culture, changing society, whatever it might be - it might be homelessness, whatever - and lately, I've redefined success as 'fulfilling your soul's purpose.'”

                                              -Jack Canfield

“What is your purpose?”  For Jane, the answer to this simple question was one that had always seemed to elude her.  She’d been working in marketing for years, and her career was nothing short of impressive, one success after another.  She was, for the most part, happy, except for a small, nagging sense that, for all her success, something seemed to be missing.

It wasn’t until Jane attended her niece’s cello recital, that she felt something spark to life deep within her.  She watched the parade of young musicians that night, each performance a sweet reminder of her own childhood piano recitals.  She was struck with the realization that those piano lessons had not only given her a life-long appreciation for music, but had taught her the value of hard work and perseverance, a lesson that had equipped her for her adult success.

Upon learning that the music program at her niece’s school was in danger of being cut unless independent funding could be found, Jane sprang into action, using her professional skills to organize fundraising efforts.  Months later, the program was alive and thriving thanks to Jane’s work, and Jane had found a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction in her life that she had never before felt.  In helping children have access to music, Jane had found her purpose.

Discovering one’s purpose in life is like finding that critical piece of a puzzle.  All the other pieces begin to align and the picture suddenly begins to take shape and makes sense.

Have you discovered your purpose?

Extraordinary

Extraordinary

I like to just think of myself as a normal person who just has a passion, has a goal and a dream and goes out and does it. And that's really how I've always lived my life.”

- Michael Phelps

Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian in history.  Over the course of his swimming career, he has participated in five Olympics, winning a total of 28 medals, 23 of them gold.  No other Olympian has come close to this feat.

And yet, regardless of his spectacular accomplishments, Michael Phelps considers himself a “normal” person.  Most, however, would disagree with this humble self-assessment. His talent and drive are anything but ordinary.

But talent and drive are only part of the force behind his achievement. The rest is passion.

Passion breathes life into natural talent, giving it purpose and meaning.  Passion gives a sense of excitement and joy to the hard work of cultivating that talent.  Passion inspires dreams and provides the desire to meet them.

Passion makes the ordinary extraordinary.

Don’t settle for ordinary.  Unleash your passion . . . and prepare for extraordinary.
