The Data Pyramid

The Data Pyramid

Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers.  It may not be difficult to store up in the mind a vast quantity of facts within a comparatively short time, but the ability to form judgments requires the severe discipline of hard work and the tempering heat of experience and maturity.”

Calvin Coolidge

The diagram to the right is often referred to as the “Data Pyramid.”   Essentially, Information can be gleaned from the analysis of Data.  But one should not stay there. Moving information should then be used to produce Knowledge.  And with Knowledge one can take action.

At the highest level is Wisdom.  Wisdom comes from the insights yielded by Knowledge.

To be prepared for individual or organizational success, strive for the attainment of Knowledge and Wisdom.  While Data and Information are useful, Knowledge and Wisdom are essential.

And those who were seen dancing, were thought to be crazy, by those who could not hear the music.”

- Friedrich Nietzsche

“Up, up,” the two year-old child pleaded to her mother as they stood in the airport security line.

“Not now, Sarah,” the mother replied.  “You must be a big girl and walk by yourself.”

Of course, these statements meant nothing for little Sarah, who was obviously uncomfortable with the security process.  She continued to hold up her arms and plead, “Up, up.”

After clearing security, the mother turned to me and apologized for her daughter's unrelenting requests to be held.  I assured her that it was not a problem at all.

You see, my two-and-a-half-year-old grandson struggles with an expressive delay condition, which hinders his verbal communication skills.  While the mother worried that I might have been irritated by her daughter’s pleas of “up,” they were, in fact, music to my ears.

How often do you make assumptions about the perspectives of others?

The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it.”

- Moliere

Obstacles are seen as barriers hindering or preventing us from reaching our goals.  Some obstacles are material (lack of money, lack of time, lack of help or lack of skills) other obstacles are mental (lack of desire, lack of opportunity, lack of action or lack of purpose).

Identifying and classifying the obstacles we face is the first step to overcoming them.  Here, our perspective plays a role.  Do we believe we are the Captain of our ship - the Master of our fate?  Or do we believe we are at the mercy of uncontrollable external forces?

Do you believe you, and you alone, have been given the right to make this choice?

How will you choose?

What Is Your Real Purpose?

What Is Your Real Purpose?

Make your work to be in keeping with your purpose.

- Leonardo da Vinci

“What do you think your real purpose is as Vice President of Engineering?  Is it to be the best engineer in the company, or is it to build an engineering organization that is best for the company?” asked John’s friend.

John replied, “At first I thought my real purpose was to be the best engineer in the company.  After all, it was my engineering experience that factored into my promotion.  After about six weeks on the job and a few missteps, I came to realize that was not my real purpose.  It was really not about me, but about what 'we' could do.”

What is your real purpose?  It’s a simple and straightforward question.  Yet, some of us stumble over it.

Let’s pause and reflect a moment.

What is your real purpose?

Do you know the important reasons behind what you do?

Do you know why ‘knowing your real purpose’ is important?
