"The key to realizing a dream is to focus not on success but on significance -- and then even the small steps and little victories along your path will take on greater meaning."
—Oprah Winfrey
Goals provide a map. They create a map with all the future steps to take on your journey. But everyone knows how difficult journeys can be, and how riddled with potholes and wrong turns the road ahead can become.
When the road gets rough, discouragement and disappointment may seem like the only things on the horizon. Weariness takes over, and the destination may seem too far and too difficult to reach. The entire journey can feel like wasted time and effort, and success an impossible dream.
At low times like these, however, a readjustment of attitude is necessary, and it’s important to remember one thing: each step forward is a victory in itself.
It’s tempting to define the journey by its end—by its successful completion, or its failure— but when the road is only viewed as a tool, the accomplishments along the way are missed. The relationships, the personal victories, the ground already covered are overlooked.
When discouragement sets in, take time to reflect on how much you have already accomplished, and how far you’ve actually come. You might just be surprised by the results.
Learn to see each step as a small victory, and your journey will be a success regardless of the destination.
