“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Life is often compared to a journey -- and for good reason. Like a journey, life stretches behind and before us, a path full of twists, turns, mountains, valleys, rocky ground, and soft soil.
Too often we concern ourselves with the road that lies behind or ahead. That is, we focus on the past or the future. Whether pleasant or painful, the road behind is just that, behind us. While it informs our present, it does not define the present, and it surely doesn’t determine the future. The road ahead -- the future -- is unseen, unknown, and waits to be explored.
Your journey’s outcome depends on you. The decisions you made, the paths you choose, the steps you take are determined by what lies within you, not what lies ahead or behind you.
Grow from the journey. Learn from the journey. And above all enjoy the journey. Where it started and where it ends will never be as important as how it was made.
